To say that Suzy Menkes is the fashion reporter and editor for the International Herald Tribune only hints at her significance. She has readers across the globe, who count on her authority and knowledge. She has been reporting on fashion since the 1960s and is one of the most influential people in the fashion world – witness the furor caused by a recent piece she wrote complaining that the circus around Fashion Week has become more important than the collections being shown. A graduate of Cambridge University, she is both an officer of the Order of the British Empire and a member of France’s Legion of Honor. She talks with Mallis about the role of critics, how she got involved with fashion and the designers that have excited and disappointed her.
