From 2009-2013, Denmark is engaged in a grand-scale design project at the UN, highlighting one of the great icons of Danish design history, Finn Juhl, as well as contemporary Danish designers. Located in the UN Conference Building is a true gem from the era of Danish Modern design; the Trusteeship Council Chamber, designed as a whole by Finn Juhl and completed in 1952. The chamber has since been one of the most frequently used spaces in the UN, housing not only meetings, but also cultural events, and visited by app. 400.000 tourists a year. In 2008, the UN asked Denmark for support to restore the chamber in accordance with Finn Juhl’s original vision and complete a refurbishment with new Danish design furniture fitting Finn Juhl’s original decor. Denmark’s wish is that the finished chamber will be not only a model example of Danish design tradition, but also showcase the best of contemporary Danish design. Designer duo Kasper Salto and Thomas Sigsgaard have been chosen for the commission to refurbish the restored Chamber. On the occasion of this restoration, refurbishment and Finn Juhl’s Centennial taking place this year, the Consulate General of Denmark in New York has launched the design effort “Living the Legacy – Designing the Future,” highlighting both the heritage and the contemporary designers inspired by it. Danish Design Review New York is part of this initiative. 8 young designers have been selected to participate in the symposium and exhibition at Parsons The New School for Design. These designers were selected from the winners and nominees for the Danish Design Award 2012, which spans all areas of contemporary Danish design.
