Alberta Healthcare Professionals' Perceptions of Prescription Drug Misuse
Prescription drug misuse is a leading public health and safety concern. Although these drugs are prescribed for legitimate therapeutic purposes, they have a high potential for misuse owing to their psychoactive properties. There have been few research studies that have examined the role of healthcare professionals in identifying, preventing or even inadvertently enabling prescription drug misuse among patients.
This webinar will present the findings from a recent study that explored perceptions of prescription drug misuse among a large sample of registered nurses, physicians, surgeons, pharmacists and dentists from Alberta. The study examined clinical indicators and risk factors for prescription drug misuse, barriers to identifying this behaviour among patients, communication among healthcare professionals, and strategies to prevent and address prescription drug misuse.
This webinar will include a Question and Answer session, as well as a discussion about how this research can inform the development of education and prevention initiatives aimed at addressing this important healthcare issue.
