The designation of October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child is according to the United Nations, a day meant to focus "attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights". The designation of the day seeks to promote both awareness and action with respect to the unique challenges and issues girls face both nationally and internationally. The three primary goals of the conference are to: raise awareness of local and global challenges and issues that are faced by girls, consider solutions, and motivate engagement.
